About Me

Horses have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started having a lesson a week in 1994 with Emma Day on whatever horse she could borrow for me and nothing stopped me turning up for my lesson so even in bad weather she'd teach me stable management in the hope we'd one day persuade my parents to let me have a horse!

In October 2004 after a series of half loans I finally got my own pony – Hurricane Lilly. She was a 5 year old skewbald cob who’d competed in local shows but was otherwise fairly inexperienced.

Lilly and I became soul mates and had a go at everything. During our first season we won a One Day Event at Trowell Cross Country and in dressage qualified for Stoneleigh becoming 2005 Prelim Trailblazer Champions and also taking 5th place at Novice. Our prize was a year’s membership to British Dressage so we joined and gave affiliated dressage a go!

We were selected to represent Northern BYRDS at a Home International in Ireland. All our travel plans were made and I was so looking forward to it. However, a week before we were due to travel, Lilly was fatally injured in the field and it felt like my world had fallen apart. I went to Marlton to experience it for Lilly and support the rest of team and just know she'd have performed well!

I was helped through this sad time by a very special family who have become a major influence on my life since – the Moody family! I met them through BYRDS as Hannah was the Northern BYRDS Rep. and the whole family played an invaluable role in helping young dressage riders. They found other horses for me to ride over the season and helped me find another horse. In October 2006 - exactly 2 years to the day since I had Lilly - I moved onto a horse transitioning from a 13-2 cob to a 16-2 Holsteiner. Cranswick’ - Diesel - was a very handsome 5 year old who'd really not done anything.

After 'A levels' in June 2007 I started a gap year up at Moody Dressage where I completed my British Dressage Apprenticeship and gained valuable experience riding competition horses, working as part of a team, developing Diesel and my own riding and generally living my dream. It was hard work, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. It was a great year for me culminating in me winning the BD Talent Spotting Final at Addington.

At the end of my Gap year in September 2008 I headed off to Sheffield University to start a 4 year MSc in Biological Sciences. Diesel stayed up at Moody's and I tried to combine the two, but after the first semester a choice was made - Laura Jarvis Dressage.

During 2009, I met a few setbacks. I was launched into the air by a double barrel kick leaving me with fractured ribs just before the Young Rider Squad Viewing. As I recovered, the pain I'd been having in my hips and been ignoring, became more obvious, resulting in me having surgery on both hips in March and May 2010 keeping me out of the saddle for the season. Any chance of YR Europeans had gone altogether as I had turned 21, so I took the opportunity to develop my coaching experience.

In 2011, I won the prestigious BD Young Professionals Award and a generous training grant of £4000 sponsored by Mr & Mrs David Manning. After being judged with five other finalists by Carl Hester and Nicola Buchanan, Nicola commented "Laura won as an overall picture. She rode well and was very confident and eloquent when assessing the horses and the way she rode."

At the end of 2012 I was lucky enough to set up my own dressage training yard at 'The Paddocks' in N.Leics. I have focused on establishing a client base around the East Midlands, training and competing for a variety of clients with great success. I sold Diesel on to a life more suited to his 'tomorrow will do' attitude and in 2011 purchased a young horse named Contender (Edward to his friends) and we are progressing through the levels working towards Grand Prix with excellent coaching from Hannah & Becky Moody and their trainer, David Hunt.

In 2015 I was asked to ride and help sell one of Julie Lockey's youngsters - Gieni. We just 'clicked' so she was sold to Laura Jarvis Dressage!! She took Myerscough Premier League in her stride as a 4 yr old so I plan to continue her training at home with regular trips up north to Moody Dressage planning to compete her at medium level in 2016.

I have many aims for the future but as we all know with horses you have to be open-minded and flexible!
